Trojans continue to dominate the latest threat report issued by leading antivirus software vendor BitDefender.
Topping the list with 13% of total global malware is Trojan.AutorunInf.Gen, a generic mechanism designed to spread through removable devices that often appears in such reports.
The infamous Kido or Conficker, Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen, ranks second with a score of 6.19%. Again this has been a fairly constant pest which exploits a well-known Microsoft® Windows® vulnerability. In order to get rid of this people simply have to update both the operating system and their locally-installed antimalware solution.
Third in BitDefender’s March list is Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen, which manipulates Adobe® PDF Reader’s® Javascript engine with the sole purpose to execute malicious code on users’ computer.
File infectors are represented by Win32.Sality.OG, which comes in fourth position. Shielded by a polymorphic code, the Sality family is extremely difficult to detect and expunge. Furthermore, the rootkit component of the virus tries to disable various antivirus applications installed on the infectesystem.
Ranking fifth is Trojan.JS.Downloader.BIO. This is a Javascript inserted into legitimate webpages via SQL injection techniques targeting only websites built with ASP. It also creates cookies with miscellaneous pieces of information about the victim (such as browsing habits and timestamps) and then sends them to a China-based website.
The report comes ahead of BitDefender’s participation at Infosecurity Europe 2010, the No. 1 industry event in Europe held on 27th – 29th April at Earl’s Court, London. The event provides an unrivalled free education programme, exhibitors showcasing new and emerging technologies and offering practical and professional expertise.
